ALASKA BOWLER TAKES ALL-EVENTS
LEAD AT WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS
RENO,
Nev. - After helping her team into second place at the United States Bowling
Congress Women's Championships, Sheryl Ishihara of Anchorage, Alaska, continued
to bowl well and moved into the Division 1 All-Events lead at the National
Bowling Stadium on Wednesday.
Ishihara started off her 2009 tournament
campaign with games of 188, 211 and 278 for a 677 series in team Tuesday and
helped Oh Spare Me to a 2,627 total and second place in Division 2 (team
averages from 746-845). MD Crabs With Attitude of Waldorf, Md., leads with a
2,649.
The momentum and excitement from her performance carried over to
Wednesday, and the 52-year-old right-hander added 608 in singles and 567 in
doubles for a 1,852 all-events total. Rowena DeMesa of Daly City, Calif.,
previously held the lead with 1,781. Division 1 includes bowlers with averages
from 170-189.
Ishihara, who is a secretary in four different leagues in
Anchorage, never let the pressure of the scores at the top get to her.
"I
just come to this tournament to bowl and have fun," Ishihara said. "It never
crossed my mind that I was in position to take over the lead. I wasn't even
paying attention to the big scores on the board."
And even though they
didn't know what the top scores were going in, there was plenty of excitement
when their names appeared in the standings.
"We were taking pictures of
the leaderboard after team," Ishihara said.
"I'm sure my teammates will be
looking at the scores everyday, but I'm only going to look once in a while. I'm
extremely happy with what how I performed, so if my score gets beat, it's all
right."
Another memorable moment for Ishihara at this year's Women's
Championships was having her mother watching her compete.
"My mother came
all the way from Arizona to support me," Ishihara said.
"She was the one who
got me involved in bowling, along with my aunt. Having her here made the past
few days quite special."
Ishihara's success in team included Jimmie
Wilson (510), Wendy Bacher (491), Kim Barnes (488) and Trancis Dees
(461).
